The map shows live where it is day or night on Earth. The dark zone is night; the light zone is day. The golden line (terminator) marks the transition where the sun is rising or setting.
Why does the day/night line move?
Earth rotates once about every 24 hours. That is why the shadow zone keeps shifting. On place pages you can also see exact sunrise and sunset times.
