UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time. It is the international reference time on which almost all time zones on Earth are based. When you check the time difference or UTC offset of a place on CurrentLocalTime.com, you are indirectly using this standard.

UTC is not a time zone in the usual sense. It is the zero point: the basis from which other regions derive their local time with a UTC offset, such as UTC+1 or UTC−5. That allows pilots, developers, travellers and international teams worldwide to use the same time reference.

What does UTC stand for?

The abbreviation UTC is a compromise between English (Coordinated Universal Time) and French (Temps Universel Coordonné). In practice you do not need to remember that origin: UTC is simply the global standard clock that time zones align with.

On many websites, in flight schedules, satellite communication and databases you will see times in UTC. That avoids confusion when people in different countries need to plan the same event — for example a live stream, a launch or an international meeting.

The difference between UTC and GMT

GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the older British reference time, named after Greenwich in London. For a long time GMT was used as the international standard. Today UTC is the official, more precise successor.

For everyday use — travel, calling, following the news — it usually does not matter whether you say UTC or GMT. In practice both often point to the same clock time. Technically UTC differs because it is tied to atomic clocks and maintained internationally, while GMT is more historical.

How do UTC+1, UTC−5 and other offsets work?

UTC and Central Europe

In most of Central Europe, standard time in winter is UTC+1. During daylight saving time the clock moves forward one hour to UTC+2.

When UTC is 12:00, it is 13:00 in Amsterdam or Berlin in winter, and 14:00 in summer. That extra hour comes from daylight saving — not because UTC itself changes; UTC remains the fixed reference.

Why do computers use UTC?

Leap seconds — briefly explained

The Earth does not rotate perfectly evenly. Sometimes UTC must be adjusted by a leap second so atomic time stays aligned with Earth’s rotation. That happens rarely and you usually will not notice it in daily life.

For travel, calling and checking world time you do not need to account for this. It matters mainly to scientists and precise time measurement.

UTC, time zones and daylight saving — how do they connect?

UTC does not change when countries switch to daylight saving time. What does change is the offset of the local time zone: from UTC+1 to UTC+2, for example. Countries that switch on different dates can temporarily have a different time difference than you are used to.
